Kashi Nagri is a mythological city located in the present city of Varanasi. It is considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world. This world famous ancient city of India is situated on the left (north) bank of the Ganges in the south-eastern corner of Uttar Pradesh between the Ganges confluences of Varuna and Asi rivers. At this place, the Ganges has usually taken a turn of four miles from south to north and above this curve is the position of this city. The ancient 'Varanasi' name of this city had become 'Banaras' from the folklore, which has been officially changed to 'Varanasi' by the Uttar Pradesh government.
There is a mention of Kashi in the Rigveda, the oldest text of the world - 'Kashiritte .. aap ivakasinasangribhita:'. According to the Puranas, this is a proto-Vaishnavite place. Earlier it was the puri of Lord Vishnu (Madhava). Where Sri Harike's Anandashru had fallen, Bindusarovar was formed and the Lord was enshrined here in the name of Bindhumadhava. There is such a story that when Lord Shankar cut off the fifth head of Brahmaji in anger, he got stuck by his deeds. Even after traveling in many pilgrimages for twelve years, that head did not separate from them. But as soon as he entered the border of Kashi, Brahmahatya left him and that skull also fell apart. The place where this incident took place was called Kapalmochan-teerth. Mahadev liked Kashi so much that he asked this holy puri from Vishnu for his regular residence. Since then Kashi became his abode.
